Company History

George Watkins started the business in 1979 in his Troy, Michigan, basement as a result of his own recovery. As is so often the case with recovering people, he hoped to help others achieve sobriety, and he wanted to give something back to the field that had helped him become a fully functioning person. He went back to school and got his masters degree in counseling studies and worked as an addictions counselor and employee assistance consultant. But his natural energy and entrepreneurial spirit were misplaced in the confines of a therapist’s office.

So George decided to build on his background as a former advertising executive. He designed and printed a line of posters for workplaces that urged employees to seek help for their personal problems through their employee assistance program. His graphics department was his kitchen table. His distribution center was his basement. He marketed his products through the addictions and recovery community. He soon developed other print products and expanded his product line to include schools and communities.

Today, the company serves customers nationwide and internationally with a broad array of PRP-produced products, as well as products distributed for other print and video production companies. George and his wife, Jan, no longer pack the boxes sent around the world from PRP’s distribution warehouse in Troy — but they still jump in when needed! A dedicated team of professionals in editorial, graphics, marketing and business administration now operate using the mission that George created more than 20 years ago — to produce the highest quality materials that will have the most positive effect on people’s lives. That is one part of the business that will never change.
